The DroidBOX Play Gamepad joins the DroidBOX line of Android kit looking to dominate your living room by turning your Android devices into little games consoles.
It looks similar to an Xbox controller, although rather than two shoulder buttons there is only one set of buttons on the corners, the second set is located on the back of the controller, a bit like the paddles on a Steam Controller.
Setup was just a matter of pairing this with the device you want to use it with, be it mobiles or the recently reviewed DroidBOX T8-S Plus Android box.
If using with mobiles you’ve got two options, you can either pop the mobile onto the included stand or you can mount it in the retractable holder (see the review video for a demo of this). It’s a smart bit of design although the retractable holder can be a bit tricky to use so be careful your mobile doesn’t pop out.
When it works with games this is a decent controller and there are some good Android games to play these days that are a lot more fun to play with a controller rather than on screen controls.
However, it was disappointing to find the controller isn’t supported by some major games by Gameloft, it doesn’t work properly with Asphelt8 or Modern Combat 5.
It’s a real shame because this is a decent controller which feels good in the hand, however if you don’t play Gameloft games this limitation isn’t an issue for you.
