The Aukey speaker offers an unusual design for a bluetooth speaker.  It’s glossy black on top and matt black at the bottom, so far so standard, the unusual design element is that the speaker grills are under the unit rather than on top, which means the sound fires down rather than up.

It was nice to see not only a USB charging cable and aux cable but also a carry case, an often missing feature of such speakers. The speaker further differentiates itself by being able to charge your mobile from it’s battery, a handy feature if you want a speaker for use on the go.

Unfortunately despite all these nice touches the speaker itself proved to be really poor quality, offering a tiny sound that at high volumes was painful to listen to. The bizarre decision to have the sound fired down rather than up can make add an additional muffle if not placed on a hard surface.

There was also a crackling/humming noise, very noticeable at low volume, which was very annoying.  Although the video below features this problem it’s not very clear due to the cameras poor quality microphone.  Bluetooth also seems to be a problem, with music cutting out completely if the phone was moved a little away from the speaker.

Points for trying something new and including a carry case, but with so many low cost speakers available it’s hard to see why you’d buy this over something like the excellent Tecevo S10.
