The Huawei Blaze represents astonishing value for money. A couple of years ago a phone with the range of features this has would have costs hundreds, now it can be picked new up for around £100 from the likes of Amazon. It has an aging interface which won’t suit those looking for the latest and greatest handset, but for those looking for an entry level handset you can’t go far wrong.

Unpacking the Huawei Blaze
Huawei have chosen to package the Blaze in a familiar looking box, they’ve clearly taken packaging design inspiration from HTC.

The size of the packaging makes the handset appear rather small when first unpacked, and is due to the larger USB plug adaptor taking up much of the space. One thing to note is that the SIM free version reviewed here did not include a Micro SD card, making them a must buy extra.

Overall the handset design looks and feels more premium then you might expect at this price point. The Huawei Blaze has what appears to be a metal strip running around the edge, but in fact this is plastic doing a very good job of appearing metallic. The design of the back case caused some confusion, trying to fit the Huawei Blaze battery was a little trickier than expected as the case has a lip that comes round the front of the handset. Aside from that the initial setup was a breeze.

Powering up
Powering up the Blaze and if you’ve used Android you’ll be in familiar territory. The Blaze runs the older Gingerbread version of Android and for a budget handset it runs it surprisingly smoothly. The screen is clear, navigation is simple and you gain access to the Google Play app marketplace; several apps were downloaded to see if they would impact the Blazes performance and there were no noticeable issues.

Considering this handset can currently be picked up for £50 – £100 it delivers an impressive performance. The screen might be considered a little small by modern standards which means the onscreen keyboard can be a little fiddly, but the beauty of Android is that so much can be customised this issue can be resolved by installing a different keyboard.
Huawei have crammed in both front and rear cameras, but no flash. Camera performance was OK, able to take 3.2 megapixel photos and also shoot video (although not at the same time as some modern handsets do).

GPS is also included providing access to navigation options and social media checkins. The screen is too small for comfortable use as an in car sat nav, but if you want to find the nearest takeaway after a night out then it’ll do the job.

The Huawei Blaze might not run the latest version of Android, but then again it doesn’t cost hundreds of pounds. The lack of micro-SD card will up the purchase price a little, but as an entry level handset there is little to fault considering the low price you can pick this up for; you get a handset which gives you telephone, MP3 player, GPS, and camera.

Good for: Those looking for a cheap Android handset that offers a good range of features.

Avoid if: You want a large screen, the latest version of Android, or a handset with a brilliant camera and flash.
