Nokia Lumia 800 ReviewThe Nokia Lumia 800 has been seen by many to be the start of Nokia’s attempt at a major comeback, having lost ground to Apple and Android handsets, but does it do enough?

In reviewing the Nokia Lumia 800 you can’t help but also review the Microsoft Windows Phone 7 operating system, with the two companies formally jumping in to bed with each other some time ago now.  A risky gamble, but one that means Nokia now have a modern feeling operating system that is light years ahead of the aging Symbian OS used on most of the lower end devices.

The handset itself is a wonderful slab of technology.  Although it feels small compared to the HTC One X it is still a good sized phone with a 3.7 inch screen (800 x 400 pixels) that many will prefer over today’s large screen devices.

The top of the handset has the microSIM holder, the charging port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.  The charger is hidden beneath a small flap which feels like it might be a weak point over time and a lot of use.

The right hand side of the handset has the volume switches and dedicated camera button.  The camera button is a big plus and something missing from most modern handsets, this is a real pity as it makes using the phone as a camera feel like it’s a camera.

Fire up the Lumia 800 and you get the gorgeous WP7 operating system.  This is very different to both the iPhone and Android OS and something that takes time to get use to.  This is both a plus and a minus point and something that will likely cause initial confusion followed by delight as it all starts to make sense.

WP7 uses the concept of live tiles, displaying information quickly on the screen.  In practice this takes a little bit of getting use to, but once you are use to it it’s a nice experience.  Its easy to see if you have calls/messages and after hooking up the phone to all your various social accounts the messages received, be they email, text, or Facebook, all appear in the same place.  You can still make use of dedicated apps such as Facebook if you’d rather message from there, but it creates a really nice connected experience.

Although you can download apps there are a number of features built in that other mobiles would have to download an app for.  As well as social network integration you get a music identification service, a barcode scanner, text translator and speech recognition.  This means out of the box you’ve got everything you need on a day to day basis without having to install any third party apps.

Nokia Drive can be downloaded for free and is perhaps the best free sat nav software available, allowing you to download maps for around the world.  You also have Local Scout which is similar to Google Local, but doesn’t seem as slick or as comprehensive.  This may get better over time as more people start to use it.

In the short time I had with the Nokia Lumia 800 I was impressed with both the quality and the uniqueness of the operating system.  As we are more than a year since it was launch the handset can be picked up for a really good price and it makes an excellent entry phone to the Windows Phone 7 experience.
