The SCISHION V88 android box is a low cost media streamer available from GearBest.
In the box you get the V88, basic remote, HDMI cable and power plug. Be careful when ordering as it’s available with a number of different plugs and the sample provided for review came with a non UK plug.
It looks like many other Android media boxes: a small black box with USB ports and the ability to connect to your network via either WiFi or Ethernet.
Good to see the manufacturer hasn’t skimped on the USB ports, there are 4 in total, 3 down the side and one on the back. This opens up all sorts of options, you can use them with USB remotes, keyboards, mice, or even storage devices such as external hard drives.
Boot up the V88 and you’re presented with a simple, TV screen filling, menu consisting of large colourful buttons. The buttons act as containers for app shortcuts and you can add or remove whatever apps you like into each menu.
On the home page you have the ability to edit a small shortcut bar, handy if you have a couple of particular apps you use regularly.
The V88 comes with Kodi 16.1 preinstalled and this itself has a number of add ons pre-configured. As a few error messages were displayed regarding the plug ins it’s probably better if you uninstall Kodi and reinstall a clean copy, adding in any plug ins you normally use.
The included remote is fine for basic navigation but is problematic when entering text, these sorts of media streamers are a lot less frustrating to use if you have an airmouse/keyboard remote such as the Droidbox VIP remote.
As a media streamer it worked OK, although a few YouTube videos refused to play for some reason that was never identified.
Web browsing was OK, it felt a bit slow to load pages, but it does the job should you want to use this for a spot of browsing on your TV.
If you’re looking for a box for a spot of Android gaming you want to check out the Sumvision Cyclone X4 instead.
The games used for testing Android devices, Asphalt8 and Modern Combat 5, were unavailable on the V88. Trying other games proved to be very frustrating, menus were slow and unresponsive with some games quitting before they could be played.
The redeeming feature of the V88 is the very low price. If you’re looking for a basic media streamer this won’t set you back very much, but you may find it a little frustrating to use.
