Switching mobile providers just got easier

You’re at the end of your mobile contract, you’ve seen a great deal with another provider and you want to take the number you’ve had FOREVER with you, but you don’t want to be sat on the phone on hold for ages before having to speak to an advisor.

Sound familiar? For years the process of transferring your mobile number, aka porting your number, between provider A and B has been a lengthy, often frustrating process.

Well no more! From 1st July 2019 you can move provider by sending a text to your current provider.

How to port your mobile number via text

You’ll request a code by text:

  • Text “PAC” to 65075 if you wish to port your number to a different provider
  • Text “STAC” to 75075 if you wish to terminate your existing contract without porting your number.

Your existing provider will send you the requested code via text. This text will also include important information such as your credit balance or exit penalties.

You give this code to your new provider. The code needs to be used within 30 days so it’s best to get the code when you’re ready to sign up to your new provider rather than ages before.

The downside to one text switching

Sounds great doesn’t it? And for most people this will be a brilliant way of easily moving from one mobile provider to another. However there is one disadvantage to this new approach: No haggling.

If you’re generally happy with your current provider and just looking for a better deal you’d be better off calling your existing provider and going through to the cancellation team.

Before doing this have in mind your ideal new package/know the phone you’re interested in. The threat of customers leaving is a powerful incentive to offer great deals which you’ll miss out on if you just send a text asking to switch.
