Go to any supermarket and you’ll see entire sections dedicated to the plethora of toothbrushes available, manual, powered, cheap and expensive.  The Oral B Triumph 5000 falls into the expensive and powered categories, and you might wonder if it’s worth the extra cash when very cheap battery toothbrushes don’t offer a massive improvement over manual brushes.  Could a more expensive powered toothbrush really be THAT much better? The quick answer is yes!

The Oral B Triumph 5000 comes with a ‘starter kit’ of brush heads (3 different types) a charging dock, carry case, and the somewhat gimmicky smart guide. This guide acts as a clock when not in use, but then as soon as you turn on the toothbrush it starts a counter. After 30 seconds (on daily brush mode) there is a beep, the toothbrush stops momentarily and you’re meant to move on to the next quadrant of your mouth. It’s very simple and gives an indication that future versions might go the way of smart devices and collect data you can view on your mobile. You don’t need to use the guide, so when travelling that can be left at home, as even without it the brush stops to indicate you should move to the next quadrant.

Triumph 5000

If you do head away from home the Triumph 5000 comes with a carry case that can hold two brush heads as well as the main unit. The case feels nice and secure and should protect the Triumph 5000 from the general bumps and knocks baggage gets while in transit. Battery life is very good, lasting around 7 – 10 days from fully charged.

The brush will also tell you if you’re brushing too hard, there is a red light on the back of the brush that comes on if you’re pressing too hard and could be causing damage to your gums.

In use the Triumph 5000 was immediately better than anything else ever used. The floss head in particular cleared areas that were previously tricky to get to with a manual toothbrush and you’re left with a dentist fresh feeling after the first brush. Although most will use the daily clean option 90% of the time there are some additional modes such as deep clean, sensitive, polish and massage and some of these modes are designed for use with specialist brush heads.

The brush heads are also well designed, indicating by a change in colour when you should replace them and they’re not massively expensive to replace, with a pack of 4 floss brushes costing around £12 for 4.

If you’ve always been sceptical about expensive tooth brushes don’t let that stop you investing in one, after a couple of uses you’ll see the huge benefit they offer over manual toothbrush. Highly recommend this set.
