USB drives are widely available and tend to all look the same, offering some variation in size and colour. So its great to see a unique approach being taken in the Cryptex Steampunk USB flash drive to make one stand out from the crowd.
The drive comes well package in a really nice box that contains the drive, instructions and a small carry pouch.
It’s fairly big for a USB flash drive, being about 6cm wide. That size if required for the 5 digit combination lock which is used to secure the drive when not in use.
The code is provided, it can’t be set, and it’s recommended you make a note of the code before getting rid of the little code sticker on the unit. Handily if you happen to keep the nice box there is a space on the box to write the code on.
The design is really interesting and it’s not at all obvious what this might be, in showing others no one managed to successfully guess, generally thinking it was some sort of puzzle to solve, good luck with that, with 5 different digits and 4 sides that’s a lot of combinations to try out!
To ensure you can easily access the stick you don’t need to guess which side is the correct side to enter your code, there is a row of rides to indicate the code side. Once entered the USB drive easily slides out and is ready to use.
This is a 15GB USB 2 drive and was easily recognised when connected to a Windows 8 laptop.
Although this feels well made it’s unlikely to stand up to someone determined to get to your USB drive, so it’s not something you want to be storing sensitive information on unless you’ve already encrypted the information.
The Cryptex is a really fun little item that feels very well made, and although there are lots of cheaper alternatives non are as steampunk stylish as this.
