Home meal kits are nothing new, I’ve been using Gousto for years. As there are so many options, any new entrant is going to have to come up with a new take on the idea, enter Plateaway.
Plateaway aims to combine the restaurant delivery aspect of Deliveroo with the home cook aspect of meal kits.
If you’ve tried Deliveroo you’re sure to have experienced what I call ‘delivery dip’. In other words, while it’s nice, due to the delivery time there is a dip in quality. What if you could serve up restaurant-quality food from your kitchen, without any delivery time?
That’s the promise, and one sunny weekend I put it to the test by ordering from Hard Rock Café.
What is a meal kit?
Meal kits, aka meal boxes, have been around for years but gained a lot more interest during the pandemic lockdown, when heading out to shops and restaurants became restricted, and food delivery demand shot up.
Meal kits are pre-selected meals delivered to your door in one box. They come with everything needed to make a delicious meal, including ingredients and cooking instructions.
The most well-known brands in the UK are HelloFresh and Gousto, and there are new entrants taking on specific diets such as Grubby who are tackling vegan meals. Each of these offers a selection of meals and you typically get 3 or 4 healthy meals delivered to have throughout the week.
Plateaway is a little different to the existing brands as it offers restaurant kits. Instead of your every day meals, Plateaway aims to provide you with your treat meals, the type you have once in a while when you head out to a nice restaurant.
The concept is still the same, you get all the ingredients and a recipe card in the box, it’s just that the main meal kit is sent to you directly from the restaurant.
How does a meal kit work?
All the meal kits I’ve every tried operate similarly and are very easy to order.
A meal kit works by first placing an order via a website or mobile app. Select the meal you wish to receive, select a delivery date and checkout. On delivery day you’ll receive a box containing the ingredients and instruction cards.
Every service I’ve tried has done a fantastic job with the delivery packaging, usually included a special cool box area to keep items that should be refrigerated cool.
For this experiment, I placed one order from 2 different restaurants: Hard Rock Cafe and Tarla Bakes. You can place a single order for as many kits as you like, but keep in mind they are all despatched independently, so in this case I was expecting 2 deliveries.
From Hard Rock Cafe I picked the BBQ Meal Kit which allows you to make:
- Smoked BBQ Ribs
- 2 x BBQ bacon cheeseburgers
Unfortunately, on delivery day Tarla Bakes suffered a courier problem and my order didn’t arrive. The Plateaway team were very quick to make contact, let me know what had happened and rearranged it for a different day, because Tarla Bakes wanted to send a fresh kit out rather than the one that had the courier problem.
Fortunately, the delivery day happened to be a beautiful hot and sunny day, perfect for a BBQ!
Is the Hard Rock Cafe meal kit any good?
There was a lot more food included in the kit than I expected, and so we ate it over 2 days, the burgers on day one and the ribs on day two.
The kit arrived with:
- Burger Patties
- Bacon Strips
- HRC BBQ Sauce
- Slices of Cheddar Cheese
- Burger Buns
- HRC Seasoning Pack
- Rack of Smoked Ribs
- Love ALL Spice Blend Seasoning
- Dry Coleslaw Mix
There were also straightforward instructions for me to follow.
All the food was delicious, much better than any home cooked burgers I’ve had before. Doing them all on a BBQ made them taste amazing!
I’m not usually one for ribs, but these were a revelation. They’d been preprepared and just needed basing with the included BBQ sauce.
If ribs and burgers aren’t you thing, don’t worry, they have a wide range of restaurants and foods available to order.
At the time of review the site has a healthy selection of restaurants, and they’re adding more on a regular basis, for example you could order from:
- Hard Rock Café
- Dirty Bones
- Burger & Beyond
- Bamboo Sushi
- Rogan Joshi
- The Black Farmer
This is just a selection and I recommend visiting the site and checking out all the options.
Plateaway Discount Code
I discovered Plateaway thanks to a Seedrs investment campaign and it sounded like a great idea. As an investor I’ve been given a special discount code that get’s you 20% off your first order. Use code: PERK20.
Typically, you would get 15% off your first order, so you get an extra 5% off using my code.
The new kids on the block looking to bring something different to the meal kit market are two brothers, Lewis and Harry Slagel.
In 2021, they listed on Seedrs and raised £771,576 from 274 investors, hitting 120% of their target raise amount.
Although they’re relatively new they’ve already sold over 21,000 kits to 14,000+ customers.
They’re backed by Haatch Ventures and the long term plan is to add more restaurants and potentially even other meal kit providers, becoming a marketplace for ordering any meal kit you like.
Is Plateaway any good?
Having tried out a kit from Hard Rock Cafe, I really enjoyed the experience It was unfortunate my second order suffered from a courier problem, but the team were quick to address the issue so I’ve no complaints there.
If you’re looking for something a little different at the weekend I highly recommend ordering yourself a treat from your favourite restaurants via Plateaway.
And if you’re looking to treat staff they’ve got you covered, they offer corporate gifting to let you treat your team.
