The DD1018DT in car multimedia system seems like it should be a great idea, a DVD player strapped to the back of a tablet that you can mount in car.
The tablet side of things is 10.1″, a good size for the back of the car. Having a built in DVD player makes this bulkier than a standalone tablet but seeing as you don’t need to hold this it’s not an issue.
Along with the DD1018DT multimedia player you get the various parts to mount this in the car. Be warned that this only works where your headrests have vertical bars, in a Ford Focus they have angled metal bars and this couldn’t be mounted.
It fit fine in a Ford Fiesta and it can be powered by trust car outlet. There is also a plug included to allow this to be used out of the car, although I found the power connection could be a little flaky and the unit would sometimes turn off until I waggled the cable a little.
The included game disc includes loads of games, lots of old 8-bit games that’ll have you shoving the kids out of the way for a try! The included remote doubles as a game pad, but feels rather unresponsive at times.
I was interested to test the USB and SD card function as that would allow you to add your own media rather than having to carry lots of DVDs around. However despite trying with a USB stick and USB drive it wouldn’t work, it just got stuck in an opening loop.
The SD card fared a little better, it at least opened the card up. Unfortunately it couldn’t play the media I had on the card and I see after a little reading around the unit is fairly limited in what it can play, just mp3 or avi files.
So if you want an in card DVD player this does a good job of being easy to mount on the back of a headrest. However if you want an in car multimedia system you’d be better off investing in a low cost Android tablet, it’ll have better games and better video file playback compatibility.
