Asustor are back with version 2 of the AS3102T Home NAS, a 2 drive networked attached storage device with lots of tricks in it’s box.

I’ve not tried version 1 of this NAS but I have tried a number of other models, such as the AS4002T, and the AS3102T V2 follows a very similar design.

It’s a black box that holds 2 hard drives and it sits quietly connected to your network providing not only storage but a range of optional uses.

It’s got a nice looking front panel, next to which is a USB 3 port for easy access. Around the back you’ve a HDMI to connect this to a TV/monitor, some more USB ports (handy if you want to add a USB keyboard/mouse) and a couple of Ethernet ports.

Asustor tell me the big upgrade over version 1 of this NAS is the addition of a second NAS port and the ability to use both via Link Aggregation.

Asustor AS3102T V2 now supports Link Aggregation

Inside the box you have:

  • Intel Celeron 1.6GHz duel core processor
  • 2GB DDR3L memory
  • Support for up to 3.5″ SATAII/III HDD x2

As with all Asustor NAS devices setup was very easy. First thing you’ll need to do is add some hard drives, these aren’t included and will add to the cost but as long as you get a couple of good drives they’ll last you years. I recommend the excellent Seagat IronWolf hard drives.

Asustor have done a brilliant job updating their ADM software to take advantage of IronWolf integration and you can now see a lot more information about the drives performance in the NAS console.

As with previous Asustor NAS drives the AS3102T V2 runs the ADM software platform and this gives you a huge amount of options, you can use this just as storage, it can be a Plex server, a website host, elearning platform, the list goes on and on and it’s well worth spending some time checking out the NAS app store and experimenting with the options.

The loss of Kodi on the Asustor platform means the HDMI port seems less relevant than it once was, after all Plex has so many apps across a range of devices the NAS doesn’t need to be directly connected to a TV to access your media, but it’s good to have the HDMI port available in case there are other apps you’d like to use on your TV.

Plex is a brilliant media server that allows you to easily access your music, videos and photos. Recent updates also allow live TV recording, that requires a TV turner to be purchased and hasn’t been tested by this reviewer but should be an interesting experiment if you’re looking to cut the cord.

Talking of remote access, there are a number of Asustor mobile apps that allow you to manage and access your content on the go. You can easily upload/download to your NAS while out and about and Asustor have done a great job creating a product that’ll act as your own personal cloud, replacing services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google/Apple photos, Spotify etc.

I’ve struggled to find anything to dislike about the AS3102T V2, OK it lacks the 10Gbit network speed of the AS4002T but in some ways the link aggregation is a better method as most people won’t have the hardware to support such high speeds anyway.

The HDMI interface is usable but a bit sluggish…but that’s really me nitpicking to find something that could be better.

As it is this is another quality NAS, a highly versatile device for the home that’ll be especially attractive to those who like to tinker and explore what their devices can go.
