The D-Link Motion Sensor is part of the ‘mydlink’ home range of gadgets to help automate and secure your home.
There isn’t too much to the motion sensor, it has a sensor on the front, a reset button on the side and a WPS button which is used during the setup process. Plug it in and it’s ready to be setup via the myDLink Home app.
D-Link have included a small card with the motion sensor that has two QR codes on it. The first can be used to quickly find the app, the second is used to tell the app which product you’re setting up. You then just follow the on screen instructions to get the motion sensor onto your network.
Once setup you have a few options. On it’s own the motion sensor can send you a notification every time it detects motion. This is obviously only of use when you’re not expecting motion and so it’s good to see options for setting up on/off schedules to save you being bombarded with notifications every time someone is home, e.g. in the evening.
If this is all you’re after then the motion sensor is great and works well. However, being on WiFi means there is extra potential for using the sensor to trigger other actions. For example, if you have the D-Link Smart Plug you can set it up so when motion is detected the smart plug is turned on, and so you might trigger a light to come on. Again this can be set to only work at specified times.
Unfortunately at the time of review the sensor doesn’t work with If Then This That, which is a similar system that allows you to build simple recipes for automating a huge variety of tasks and gadgets and this means the motion sensors potential is limited to other mydlink Home products.
The D-Link Home Motion Sensor does exactly what it says it will, hopefully in time it’ll be able to do a lot more by working with IFTTT.
