Netflix has been making great progress in providing original content, but there are still regional differences and gaining access to the USA version of the streaming service allows you to check out shows unavailable in the UK.

To watch American Netflix outside the US sign up to GetFlix, set up the service with your IP address and set Netflix to use the US service.  Then manually update the DNS server your device or router is using, or make use of the GetFlix app on Apple/Android. Fire up Netflix and enjoy the American content.

Some of that may sound a bit complicated but it really isn’t, it’s very simple to get set up quickly.  Let’s take a closer look at the process.

Sign up to GetFlix

GetFlix is a VPN service designed to unblock global channels via it’s Smart DNS technology.  Every device connected to the internet is given an IP address, think of it like your house address.  And like your house address the IP address tells services such as Netflix where you are in the World and Netflix uses this information to show you content it can stream in your country.

When you connect via a VPN (Virtual Private Network) your address can be made to look like you’re in a different country and services such as Netflix will allow you to stream its American catalogue.

You can sign up to GetFlix via this affiliate link.  At the time of writing the pricing started at just $4.95 per month, but you can make big savings by paying for a year ($39.90 saving 33%) or 2 years ($54.90, saving 54%!).

Setup your Account

For GetFlix to work you’ll need to register your IP address with them.  It’s a click of a button on the main dashboard and you may need to do this again if your internet service provider changes your allocated IP address.

Getflix IP Address Select

The dashboard is also where you set your region settings for different apps.  You can have Netflix showing the USA version while Amazon Prime shows you the UK version, very smart.

Under ‘Regional Settings’ select ‘Click here to make changes…’

You can now select which regional each service should use, in this example I’m using the American Netflix but my local Amazon Prime.

With your account set up the next step is to update your devices/router to use the Getflix service.  You have 2 options:

  1. Update the DNS settings for your entire network by changing the DNS settings on your router/modem. This means all devices connected to your network can access unblocked services.
  2. Update the DNS settings on any individual device you wish to use to unblock services, such as a TV. That unblocked services can only be accessed using these devices.

Update your DNS settings

If you’d like all devices (laptops, mobiles, tablets, smart TVs) to benefit from Getflix you can update the DNS settings in your router.

Note: Some internet service providers, such as Virgin Media, have disabled the ability to update the DNS details in their routers.  In this case you either need to use your own router or set up Getflix on each device used.

Each modem/router is different and will have a different settings page but in all cases You will need to get the Getflix DNS settings from httpss://www.getflix.com.au/setup/dns-servers/

This page also has guides for setting up Getflix on:

  • Windows
  • MacOS
  • iPhone/iPad
  • Android
  • Apple TV
  • Roku
  • WD TV Live
  • Playstation 3 and 4
  • Xbox 360 and One
  • Nintedo Wii and Wii U

If your specific device isn’t listed you’ll find the process similar across all devices, head to your settings menu, find the network options and manually enter the DNS address closests to you.

Accessing USA Netflix on a Smart TV

If you are unable to update your DNS settings in your modem/router but would like to use Getflix with your smart TV head to the TVs settings menu, look for the network settings and update the DNS details.  On TVs such as the LG C8 the settings are greyed out as they are automatically obtained and you’ll need to switch to manual mode before you can update the settings.

After updating the settings the TV will likely run a connection test.  You can then head over to Netflix to check out what the USA version has to offer.  You’ll know for sure it’s the US version as it often has Top 10 in COUNTRY and this should change from your country to saying USA.  If, on first loading, it doesn’t change swap to a different screen (e.g. the film screen) and Netflix will refresh.

Getflix vs Other VPNs

So why use Getflix over other VPNs?  Getflix has developed a Smart DNS system that allows you to control which services use the American address.

Here’s the problem, if you use a normal VPN service ALL your internet traffic will appear to be located in America and that can cause issues for you when trying to do online banking and online shopping.

Smart DNS doesn’t provide any encryption or privacy, but note Getflix does provide a full VPN service to all active users.

Getfix VPN

For those looking for a VPN service to provide secure internet access there is a bonus for using Getflix: they provide a full, free, service for all paying Getflix subscribers.

Getflix says the full VPN offers these benefits:

  • All your Internet traffic gets encrypted through our global network
  • Total freedom of internet browsing without leaving any footprints
  • Hides your IP address
  • Protects your data from hackers, governments, ISPs and other prying eyes
  • Secure your computer on hotspot WiFi connections
  • You can also access to streaming services from remote country locations
  • There are NO LOGS kept in the network
  • All connections come with UNLIMITED SPEED and BANDWIDTH

And their VPN supports the following VPN protocols:

  • PPTP
  • L2TP
  • SSTP
  • OpenVPN UDP

If you’re not interested in using the VPN it’s not a problem, this is an optional extra for those who want to not only watch American Netflix but also want extra protection when online.

Is Getflix worth using?

Absolutely!  It can be used on a range of devices so no matter what you watch Netflix (or other streaming services) on you’re covered.  I’ve also found it to be a lot more reliable when travelling, giving me access to UK Netflix while in hotel rooms in France, Germany and Lisbon.

Although it might sound very technical it’s actually very easy to set up and there are excellent step by step guides available to users.

Why not give it a go with our 2 week, no credit card required, free trial?

Keep in mind there are some restrictions to the free trial, you can’t make use of the VPN, that’s only included with paid accounts.

Can I Use the Same Method to Watch Amazon Videos Outside the US as I Would for Netflix?

Yes, you can use the same method to watch brand videos on Amazon outside the US as you would for Netflix. By using a VPN or a smart DNS proxy service, you can bypass geo-restrictions and access Amazon videos from anywhere in the world.

What channel can Getflix be used with?
