The Orvibo Smart WiFi Plug is a simple to set up bit of smart home tech. Being a plug there isn’t much to it, you just pop it into a socket and plug something into it.
Setup was fairly simple, you’ll need to download an app to your mobile and this sets the plug up on your network.
One thing to be aware of is that you ensure you mobile is on the same WiFi network as you want the plug to connect to. This might sound odd, but if you have an advanced router and mobile you might have a phone on a 5GHz WiFi network and this plug trying to connect on a 2.4Ghz network, and that causes setup failure.
Once correctly setup on your home network you can control the Orvibo plug remotely, turning it on and off even when you’re not on the WiFi network. The app also has some additional features such as a timer function and a countdown function.
The Orvibo plug was also tested a garden office, unfortunately but the plugs WiFi receiver wasn’t good enough for this. Phone WiFi works fine (can stream Spotify in the office no problem), but the plug was just a little too far out of range for it to receive commands.
However, in the house there were no such problems and you can have several of these controlled by a single app.
If you don’t have your mobile on you it’s not a problem, there is a little manual switch on the unit itself for turning the Orvibo plug on/off.
The Orvibo plug works well, and for the most part the app works well too, however it has crashed a number of times which is rather frustrating.
