Asus TUF FX504GD 15.6″ Gaming Laptop Review

The Asus TUF FX504GD is aimed at those who want a decent gaming laptop without breaking the bank.

It features a 15.6″ screen, back lit keyboard, a NVidia GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card, an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 720p webcam.

It has Windows 10 Home preinstalled and you’ll be taken throught the Windows setup process when you initially power the laptop up.  Once completed it’s worth heading for the Windows update section as there were a lot of updates to apply, it’s a good idea to just leave the laptop to it as the general performance suffered with all the background updating going on.

Once Windows is up to date you’ll find performance to be very good, boot times were fine, applications load quickly and, most importantly for a gaming laptop, games run really well.

The laptop looks and feels very plastic and it weighs 2.3 Kg.  You get a 1TB hard drive (unfortunately not an SSD) of which you’ll have about 800GB after all the Windows updates.

In terms of ports, you’ve a network port, 3 x USB ports, a HDMI port and an aux out port, all located on the left hand side.  There’s no SD card slot, which makes things awkward for those looking for a laptop that can game as well as photo/video edit.

Features

  • Powered by Intel's 8th Generation Core i5-8300H processor
  • Contains 16 GB of Intel's Optane memory plus 8 GB RAM
  • Single backlit keyboard
  • Huge 1 TB storage drive for all your favourite games and movies
  • Dedicated NVidia GTX 1050 graphics

Games such as Rocket League and Fortnite run perfectly and look great on the large screen.  No Man’s Sky also ran well on the recommended settings, but struggled when the settings were bumped up to the max.

This would be a great laptop if you’re nipping round to a mates house or attending a LAN party, it gives a good performance and has enough ports for headphones/controllers/a mouse.  The backlit keyboard makes it easy to see in low light and is great to type on.

The one thing to keep in mind is the battery life is rather poor, clocking in at around 4 hours.  It’s a gaming laptop, so you’re likely going to be plugging it in, but worth keeping in mind should you want something that’ll last you on long trips with minimal access to power.
